Vocal Anatomy: Male and female vocal cords are physically different. Male vocal cords tend to be thicker and longer, even when singing in a high register. This creates a different timbre and resonance compared to female singers.

Resonance and Formants: Male singers, even when using falsetto or head voice, typically have larger vocal tracts and more pronounced lower-frequency resonances. This adds a unique tonal quality that distinguishes them from female singers, whose resonance tends to be lighter and more balanced in higher frequencies.

Techniques Used: Countertenors often rely on falsetto or reinforced head voice to produce high notes, whereas female singers naturally sing in their full voice or head voice in the same register. Falsetto has a distinct breathy and soft quality, compared to the richer, fuller sound of a female soprano.

Hormonal Influences: Hormones play a role in voice development, affecting the thickness and elasticity of vocal cords. This contributes to the overall difference in timbre between male and female voices.

Even if a countertenor sings in the same range as a soprano, their voice will usually have a more ethereal, sometimes hauntingly beautiful, timbre, whereas a soprano's voice may sound naturally powerful and resonant.

See falsettos huilgamine polnud küll kena kuulata.
